Bout of Books: Wednesday

The third day of readathon was very successful for me - I actually finished a book! Yes, I am done with Barbara Kingsolver (now that may sound a bit wrong, but I don't mean it in any bad way :) ). There are many, many thoughts I have about Flight Behavior, but no idea when I get to write about it, since I have pretty much cancelled all reviews during this week in favour of reading. Anyway, even though this wasn't a life-changing experience for me, this is not the last meeting between me and that particular author, that is for sure.
I am also extremely proud of staying away from "the new shiny book pile" and continuing with my initial readathon books - small step for mankind it may be, but for someone with considerable self-disciplining issues, that is a gigantic leap.

The books I read on Wednesday: Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver, Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury.
Total pages read: 138 (getting better daily, it seems!)
Total books finished: 1 (!!!!!) (yes, it deserves to be in red and bold)
What do my cats think about the books at hand: Robert finally warmed up to Kingsolver and just after I finished it and put it down next to me on bed, he graced Flight Behavior with his presence and took a nap on it, or well, half the upper body on it. However, Robert was very excited about the Bradbury book, and approved it wholeheartedly:
"I like this book!" I agree with you, little buddy.

Flavour of the day: It was the flavour of the first day reading outside with my boyfriend today, definitely.

I do expect my page count to skyrocket, as Something Wicked This Way Comes is a pocket-size book with big font (gotta love those :p). I also made a deal with myself that if I manage to finish this one also before the weekend, I am allowed to take a sneak peek in The Eyre Affair (positive motivating yay!).

Happy reading day to all the readathon-ers!

  1. I love Ray Bradbury, and his books are pretty perfect for a readathon. You could totally finish that before the weekend, and then The Eyre Affair can be freely peeked at (nice self motivating technique there!)

    1. You are right - Something Wicked... is all kinds of crazy and a very good read for me right now. Though very much different from other Bradburys I have read (Fahrenheit and the Martian Chronicles). Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I'm glad you liked the Kingsolver! I haven't read that one, but I LOVE The Poisonwood Bible by her :-)

Hope you have another awesome day today! Which I'm sure you will :-) And if you start The Eyre Affair, I hope you like it! It's weird and zany.

    1. I am glad I read Flight Behavior because I have The Poisonwood Bible in my Classics Club list and I am much more encouraged to approach it now. I am hoping it will be a bit more personal/emotional read for me, maybe.

I didn't get to The Eyre Affair yet, but hopefully today (100ish pages of Bradbury left); every time I pass the bookshelf I look at that Fforde there and just want to grab it :)

  3. You finished it! That is brilliant. I was talking to my Mum about Kingsolver last night because I may have just ordered it. My Mum is not a fan, she kinda turned her nose up and said 'why on earth would you want to order that?'. We have similar reading tastes so now I'm thinking I won't enjoy it but I really want to enjoy it. It's a tricky situation that can only be solved by my reading it. But I can only read it if I finish other books on my pile at the moment. Do you see my conundrum?! I really need to finish a book.

Ok, I'm calm. I'm very impressed that you have stayed away from the shiny new books. That shows some excellent self-discipline. I think you'll deserve The Eyre Affair if you hold out until the weekend.

    Have a good day today!

    1. Haha @ may have ordered it :D (My boyfriend laughed at that.) Hm, I would really like to discuss with your mum and ask what she thinks of Kingsolver and why she doesn't like her. I mainly liked this particular book because of the premise - all the environment thing and people screwing up the earth - I think it is something important for us all to think about and read about. (Then again for people who aren't into that kind of stuff this book may completely miss the mark...) Also, maybe partly because of her background, Kingsolver really has a knack for writing about nature-y stuff, and I think the way she approaches nature around us were the best parts of the book. That is something I am curious to explore in her other novels. There are some more themes explored, of course - from religion to a relationship, which were all kind of weaved through with this one environment event that kind of triggers all.

I was the same - I felt Kingsolver is one of those authors I want to like, you know? So I am kind of so-so with the result, I mean it's not my new favourite book, but I am not scared of her anymore and will read more.

  4. Congrats on finishing your first book! I love your cat, so adorable. I have already read a book that wasn't on the list of books I plan to read this week, so I admire your will power not to pick up a shiny new book! Hope the rest of the week continues to go well!

    1. Thanks, Kristin! Well it's not like we can't read whatever books we like, but for me it's like a bit of sporty interest to see if I can actually grow a bit of self-discipline (since I lack it so badly :D). Thank you for kind words and wishes and hope that your reading goes well, too :)
