Spinning Into Summer with number 6: Classics Club Spin

The number for this round of the Classics Club Spin was 6. That means a book from the "Gimme Gimme!" group for me and it is Villette by Charlotte Brontë. I am waiting for great things from this one. I also noticed that at least two other clubbers got the same book, so wohoo!

  2. I second Loni's comment on that gorgeous cover! The Classics Club is one of my challenges that I really want to read more for this summer. I probably should participate in the next spin...

  3. The yellow-and-blue cover is really gorgeous and I was tempted to get that one, but then decided I'll continue with the Penguin Classics series because most of my classics are from there and it looks better on the shelf :)

Christine, spin is a very good opportunity to get a little extra motivation for these classics books!

  4. I like the Penguin Classics cover because it's not just a pretty girl sitting around. It's a woman deeply involved with her thinking and writing. It seems so Charlotte Brontë!

    1. I agree. I chose this cover for the same reason of depth. There was also a rather good cover for the Oxford World's Classics, a woman on stairs (I don't know exactly how that would relate to the story yet), so that would have been my second choice.

  5. Um so, the Penguin English Library one is pretty much completely amazing. But, saying that, I have a lot of the classics and I like a bit of continuity on my shelves :) I hope you enjoy Villette. I started it a long time ago but I think I was still a bit dense then (it was at secondary school). Maybe if I try it again I'll have more luck. Obviously I will wait to hear your thoughts first :D

    1. Yeah, I'm the same. There are actually many neat-looking classics series out there, but I think that for the sake of one's peace of mind you just need to choose one and stick to it. Unless you like bookshelves filled with a bit from here, another there, of course :) I prefer clothbounds (of course!) but I know I'll never buy them all, so I'm sticking to Penguin Classics for now :)

I never really thought of C. Brontë as anyone else but author of "Jane Eyre", and since this is such a legendary (someone over-chewed) story, I really want to see what her other texts look like! :)
