Austen in August Reading Event

It's Austen in August time! As the name suggests, this event is about reading Jane Austen (and texts related to Jane Austen) and it is hosted by Adam over at Roof Beam Reader (click here for master post).

I have "Mansfield Park" on my bookshelf, and I haven't read it, so why not? I read "Persuasion" earlier this year and totally didn't hate it (surprise!). I haven't read her other novels (yet? yet.)

I'll probably get to Austen in the second half of the month during my 3-week holiday from work.

  1. Let's hope Austen is the perfect accompaniment to your holiday! I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to Sense and Sensibility :)

    1. I'm sure it's going to be delightful reading an Austen novel in summer :)

  2. Oh lord! Not Mansfield Park. It is, for most readers, her worst novel. It doesn't read anything like the rest of them, lacking the humor and the plucky heroine. Also, the romance is wanting.

My personal favorites are P&P and Northanger Abbey.

    1. I heed your warning :) I have this plan to eventually read all Austen novels anyway, so it doesn't matter that much in which order it's done. In a way it's even nice to go from maybe-not-the-best-ones to the ones that most people love.

  3. I'm taking part too :)
I plan on reading one new to me Austen (haven't decided which one yet) and one reread (Emma). Hope you enjoy your holiday with Austen!

  4. I am participating in Austen in August as well and plan to do some reading and a bunch of movie watching. I have read all the novels that I plan to watch the movies of and am excited to see how the books translate to screen. Mansfield Park is also on my reading list for the month. I have heard from people who hated it and who say it is the best Austen novel, so I'm keeping an open mind.

    1. Watching movies/series is an awesome idea! Right off the bat I don't think I've seen any Austen screen adaptions, although I know the most popular ones, as they are so much raved about. I want to read the books first, then watch. And yes, I'm also keeping an open mind about Mansfield Park.

    1. Thanks! It's good to know the book has potential, especially since I'm the kind of reader who often tends not to agree with the masses :)

  6. I so wish I had heard about this before I started packing my books! But we'll see... maybe if my reading goes really well during these next two weeks, I can borrow a copy of Mansfield Park from the library and join in! It's the last Austen novel I have to read :( I think that's why I've been putting it off for so long.

    1. How annoying can this be if you feel like picking a book from your collection and then they are all packed in the boxes? (Been there, felt that... many times :) ) Join in! If you also take part in Bout of Books, you should get a ton of reading done, even with the move and all!
