Bout of Books: Friday

HAPPY WEEKEND!

I finished my third book last night (literally - like 2 am... I can't even recall when was the last time I was up that late because of a book). I had a feeling that I will like Mary Roach and I am so happy that I do, and now I intend to read her other books as well. Packing for Mars was all kinds of interesting, captivating and inspirational. I'm so happy I read it. It also counts for my TBR Pile Challenge 2014 as an alternative choice, and that is not a bad thing.

Next I think I will pick up Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson. I would have picked Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but Jan is still reading it. Why Be Happy... is a shortish kind of book and also from the TBR Pile Challenge list, so I'm hoping I can get through it during the weekend. I also noticed this would be my third non-fiction pick this month (and year), which is already more non-fiction I read in total in 2013 :p

The books I read on Friday: Packing for Mars by Mary Roach
Pages read on Friday: 187
Books finished so far: 3

Flavour of the day: That perfect, moist-from-the-inside crispy-from-the-outside oatmeal-raisin cookie Jan brought me from Subway.

  1. I loved Why Be Happy, and it has my favourite quote (one of them, anyway!). Hope you enjoy it :)

    1. I saw you gave it five stars on Goodreads and it was encouraging enough I decided to pick it up next :)

I'm only in some 20 pages, but already have several post-its stuck in certain paragraphs. The language seems to be just beautiful so far, even though the subject matter is tough. But as she just said, describing certain landscape in England, "It is not an easy beauty. But it is beautiful." I guess that is a way to sum up such books as well :)

My only concern is that I haven't read Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, and if it will take away from reading experience. I'm hoping not.

    2. I don't *think* it would. I haven't read Oranges in many many years, but I don't think it would affect it too much :)

    3. I think you are right, those books definitely complement each other but to be honest I don't think there is much difference in which order to read them. I finished Why Be Happy... today and it had quite an impact on me. I will probably check out Oranges as well.

  2. I may have to steal your "flavor of the day" update for next time :-p

I'm hoping to read some of Packing for Mars today. And YAY for all the non-fiction. The majority of my reading so far this year has been non-fic too, which I'm cool with :) Even one of the graphic novels I've read was kind of non-fic.

    1. I just had to add the food update, because, as you surely know, food is almost as important as book reading! (I realise it sounds a bit sad but I do love good food....)

I'm also very happy to be reading more non-fiction (I have a few books stored on Kindle as well), and thanks for inspiring me to read it more often!

  3. It is a very oatmeal cookie kind of day here in New Hampshire today. Packing for Mars sounds like something I need on my TBR list. Have a great Bout of Books weekend!

  4. Non-fiction is so great when you find topics that really interest you -- glad you found so many good ones already! Poor Robert looks like he'd like you to put your book down and play with him though :)

    1. You are right, there are a few topics I am very interested in - space exploration, food (!) and North-Korea. I'll try to add lots of these this year.

Robert is just being moody, he is one of those cats who actually has a character and he's not always happy; sometimes he acts like he is offended or just sick of the world and then he sulks in the corner. That's what happened on the picture :)
