Closing the lid of February - 5 books, 1 story, 3 movies

February is over. The month mostly sucked big time, so I'm glad it's kinda socially acceptable to start waiting for spring now.

Due to bad stuff that happened in the beginning of the month, I only managed to finish 5 books and read one story. (In hindsight, Olympics might have had something to do with it as well. I love Olympics.)

* Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut - 2/5
* The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss - 3/5
* Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson - 4/5
* Old Man's War by John Scalzi - 5/5
* The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - 2/5
* Story: The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft - 4/5

Obviously, not the greatest reading month - only one five-star book, which was a random pick from my Sci-fi reading list and which I bought for my Kindle. The book was absolutely fantastic, review to come.

We watched three movies:

* Vacation (1983) - don't ask. There is no other reason for watching this movie than some inside jokes on the name of "Griswold". It was a good entertainment for the time when you are utterly sad, though.
* Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) - I don't think I'm going to be a fangirl for these movies. I liked first two ones well, but from thereon, it has been pretty "meh" experience. Not sure what's wrong with me.
* Reign of Fire (2002) - one of my old favourites, a completely different take on dragons. Also worth saying that Matthew McConaughey is not that annoying in this one.

Happy March!

  1. You have more reasons than most for February to have sucked (on top of all the regular reasons,) so you are more than welcome to wish for spring!

I am very meh about the Harry Potter movies myself, much favoring the books -- definitely no fangirl here either!

    1. Thanks Christine - it definitely was a bad month.

Good to know not everyone loves the HP movies - in fact, I am not even sure why I thought people love them so much. Maybe I'm completely off here :)

  2. I'm not wild about the Harry Potter movies either. There are moments in each of them that I think are absolutely superb, and totally true to the book -- in Goblet of Fire, it's the part where Hermione comes out of the dance, looking the way you look when you've made yourself extra pretty and then danced for several hours, and sits down on the stairs and cries. So exactly what dances are like at that age!

Reign of Fire is the movie I haven't seen that I nevertheless quote the most often. My family is big into doing spit-takes, so I like doing that bit where Christian Bale (I think?) takes a drink and spits it out and yells IT'S WATER! :p

    1. I also felt like Yule Ball was pretty good representation of how the dances are at this age - over the moon at one point and crying on the stairs the next. HAHAHA yeah that scene with It's water! is hilarious in the Reign of Fire movie :))

  3. That's still some impressive reading - I hope it went some way to comforting you. The Olympics are obviously a distraction, but so good!

Spring definitely feels like it is on its way so fingers crossed it makes a swift entrance. It would be nice to have a lot more light in our days.

    1. Thanks, Ellie. Once I was able to concentrate on a book for more than a page at at time again, I did find comfort (and distraction), so that's a great perk of reading, isn't it.

It's light in the evening now at 6 or so - can't wait for warmer weathers and no winter coats and reading on a park bench. :)

  4. Ha ha ... I love all of those movies. I watched Vacation quite a few times as a kid and so many of the jokes or scenes went over my head. I don't remember what happens in Reign, but Bale and McConaughey are good enough for me.

Curious to read your thoughts on The Fault in Our Stars. Did I miss your review?

    1. I saw there's some sequel to Vacation, set in Europe if I'm correct, I'm sure we'll be watching that at some point as well.

No, you didn't miss my review, I'm still trying to think how to exactly phrase my review so that the rest of the blogosphere didn't come attack me with keyboards... 2/5 isn't exactly common rating for this book. But I'll get to it this week I hope.
